Writing an essay about yourself is one of the toughest things to accomplish, whether you are applying for a college scholarship, a job, or entering a contest. Most of the institutions nowadays ask applicants to write an essay about themselves to know more about their applicants. However, not all take this seriously. What people don’t know is that these essays are essential as they would determine their chances of getting hired in a position they are applying for, a scholarship, or a contest they want to join.

So how can you write a winning essay about yourself that could also win the hearts of your readers? Here’s how.

Short but Meaty

Your ‘about yourself’ essay should not be longer than 400 words. In this word count, you are expected to express the highlights of your life at least. These highlights are your educational background, work experiences, skills and knowledge, life goals, and hobbies.

You may start your essay by telling personal things, a life motto that inspires you, or a belief that you can relate with the company or the institution you are applying to. In introducing yourself, use words that best describe you and the reason why you deserve a spot in their agency. As much as possible, you have to sincere and avoid making up stories to impress. You can also share in your essay the personal struggles you have encountered and how you could deal with them.

Basic outline

To keep your ideas organized and systematic, you have to have an outline. This is an example outline that you can use to practice if you’re not confident with your essay writing skills.

Introduction:

It should contain the name, what you do for a living, where you’re from, and some family background, educational background, work experience, skills and knowledge, hobbies, and life goals.

Body:

This the part where you share your struggles encountered and how you win over them. Express the learning experience out of the personal battle and the realizations from that experience which you can relate to the job you are applying on a positive and note.

Conclusion:

In this part, you will be reinstating your insight about your experience and sharing how you were able to help others with this new learning.

Technicalities in writing an essay

When you write your article, make sure that topic sentences always support your main idea to make your arguments valid. Avoid beating around the bush and be straightforward when you describe yourself in detail. Before submitting, always check your writing for spellings, punctuations, and the basic grammar of singular and plural, past and present.

Also, avoid making too many erasures on your essay even though it has to be written on the spot. Keep in mind that erasure in your about yourself essay reflects how you think. So as you write, if you aren’t sure of what to write next, read your first drafted sentences from the top before you proceed.
